Three jobs were performed in the demonstration.
Three jobs were performed in the demonstration.

In the first job, four-color two-sided printing was performed of images of an art-type character-focused pamphlet using rough gloss printing paper with color matching and register adjustment completed in advance. Then 200 sheets were printed in production printing. After this, the sheets were cut by a paper guillotine from Nagai Machine Mfg. Co., Ltd. (NCW-116HHD9) that was exhibited in the stand and then finished as a 16-page brochure using a saddle-stitching machine from Horizon International (StitchLiner 5500). Following this, job changeover (automatic blanket washing -> pre-inking -> plate-changing by the A-APC system -> paper switching) was performed and the demonstration proceeded to the second job. In the second job, coated paper was used and, in a tie-up involving MIS from Tosbac Systems, prepress by Screen, postpress from Horizon and Komori, four-color two-sided printing was performed by imposition of different images and sizes (ganging). After front/back register and color adjustment at the 20th sheet of test printing, 200 sheets were printed in production printing. Following this, job changeover (automatic blanket washing -> pre-inking -> plate-changing by the A-APC system -> paper changing) was performed and the demonstration proceeded to the third job. In the third job, images typical of an automobile magazine and a character-focused pamphlet were printed in four colors on coated paper by perfecting printing. After front/back register and color adjustment on the 20th sheet of test printing, 200 sheets were printed in production printing. Then, just as in the first job, postpress processes were performed and the printed work was finished as a 16-page brochure.

Two jobs were performed in the straight printing demonstration using high-fidelity ‘Kaleido’ inks from Toyo Ink.
In the first job, four-color printing of an image of an iridescent colored jewel beetle on thin coated paper (0.08 mm in thickness) was started with color matching and register adjustment completed in advance, and then 200 sheets were printed in production printing. Following this, job changeover (automatic blanket washing -> tool-less clamp plate-changing -> pre-inking -> paper changing) was performed and the demonstration proceeded to the second job. Four-color printing using coated cardboard (0.3 mm in thickness) with images of postcards was performed in the second job. After register and color adjustment during test printing, production printing of 200 sheets was performed.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony took place at 9:30 a.m. on September 16th, the first day of the exhibition, in front of the Main Gate of the North Concourse of Tokyo Big Sight with representatives of Japanese and overseas printing-related bodies in attendance.

At the beginning, President Komori of Komori Corporation offered a greeting address as chairman of the Japan Graphic Arts Suppliers Committee, the organizer of the exhibition.
In his address, after he expressed his gratitude to the nations of the world for their assistance following the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster, he delivered a message aimed at the success of IGAS 2011.
“With the growing diversity of methods of communicating information as a result of recent IT development and electronic media as well as environmental issues such a global warming, there has been a change in the sense of values regarding print media in the markets. Amidst this, we want to move everyone at IGAS 2011 with our message that print has the ability to exist in harmony and evolve with this environment and also create a bright future by means of ‘the latest technologies and the creative power of the business world.
’ Please confirm with your own eyes that ‘the products, technologies and services standing on the world’s leading edge’ are on display at the exhibition site and ‘global trends’ are being discussed in the conference tower. IGAS, an international exhibition held once every four years, always attracts a great deal of interest from overseas, including from countries in Asia, and, as Japan leads in printing technologies in Asia and the Pacific region, we must make IGAS 2011 a success.”
Then, following greetings by Mr. Takayuki Ueda, chief of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Manufacturing Bureau, and Mr. Satoshi Saruwatari, chairman of the Japan Federation of Printing Industries, as representatives of the guests, a ribbon cutting by representatives of various countries was conducted and IGAS 2011 was opened.

One of the world’s four major exhibitions of printing equipment and held once ever four years since 1999, the International Graphic Arts Show was held this year for the fourth time. IGAS 2011 took place over six days, from September 16th (Friday) to 21st (Wednesday), 2011, at Tokyo Big Sight.
With the unified theme of “Print Your Future! – Print evolves together with the environment –”, the scale of IGAS 2011 was about 60 percent compared with the previous event in 2007, with 327 exhibitors (including 32 overseas exhibitors) using 2,740 space units, as a result of the difficult economic conditions facing the printing industry due to the economic downturn in Japan as well as the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster which occurred this March. Nonetheless, there were many exhibits presented by the leading equipment manufacturers – from prepress to postpress – and the world’s major companies and ventures in the digital field. The most advanced technologies, products and solutions were introduced in each booth.
The organizer reported that there was a total of 73,554 visitors, including 5,825 visitors from overseas.

The international forum, the wide range of seminars and symposiums, and the Great East Japan Earthquake Press Photo Gallery were very busy with many participants every day.
The Global Print Tokyo Meeting, a confederation of printing machinery manufacturers associations in countries around the world, was held on the second day of IGAS 2011.

Graphitec 2011, the largest exhibition of the graphic arts in France, was held in Pavilion 4 of the Porte de Versailles Exhibition Centre in Paris from June 7 to June 10, 2011.

At this exhibition, which was organized once every three years up until 2009 and became a biennial event this year to accommodate the rapid changes that have taken place recently in the printing industry, companies presented their most advanced innovative products. Nearly 50 new products were announced at Graphitec 2011, and six of these were ‘world firsts.’ Brisk business discussions between exhibitors and visitors were held throughout the event. The show was a huge success at which one could feel the turnaround in the business climate of the printing industry.

This 13th edition of Graphitec was held on a scale that brought 169 exhibitors to the show. The organizers announced that 11,076 visitors had attended the show over the four days, representing a very successful increase of more than four percent over the previous time. Visitors came from all over France, with about 55 percent coming from the Paris region and 45 percent coming from other areas. Of the visitors to the exhibition, 45 percent were print buyers and 43 percent were printing companies.

Komori France’s 308-square-meter booth presented a chic image based on black and white monotones. Based on the theme ‘H-UV in an OffsetOnDemand Environment,’ four or five live demonstrations were run every day on a five-color H-UV-equipped Lithrone S29 (LS-529 + H-UV) focusing on OffsetOnDemand enabled by the fusion of the latest H-UV curing system and the KHS-AI integrated control system.
At this Graphitec, Komori France represented the only printing press manufacturer to exhibit a press and present live demonstrations, which resulted in a great success since the booth filled with visitors when the demonstrations were about to start. In addition, a web offset press display corner was set up near the entrance to the booth and a Kodak Trendsetter 800 was installed in the back of the booth to output the CTP plates used in the demonstrations. In the colorful reception space installed in the booth along with the seating for visitors viewing the demonstrations, serious technical and business discussions were held at a brisk pace every day.

(Demonstration content)
Explanation of the demonstrations was provided by a narrator.
In Job 1, using images modeled after pages in a fashion catalog, after printing on the front side of the sheets, the plates were changed and the back side of the sheets was printed. After the completion of production printing, 200 sheets were taken to the Horizon booth, where they were cut, folded, and saddle-stitched to create an eight-page A4 size brochure.
In Job 2, images of outer space were used. Photographs of visitors to the Komori booth were taken before the demonstration and CTP plates with these photographs embedded in the image of space were output in the booth.

Komori wishes to thank everyone who came to the booth during Graphitec 2011.
As Catherine Ressuge, Communications Director at Komori France, stated: “We’re a bit tired but very happy.
Graphitec strengthened the solidarity of our team. Both our sales and technical teams are proud of our success. We decided to exhibit this cutting-edge offset printing press because we believe that it is important to show the real added value that can be provided by Komori’s technological solutions. The president of Komori Europe, who attended the exhibition, was able to experience these results and successes. He also was there for many signings.” 255 companies visited the Komori booth during the show and the business discussions exceeded expectations. Once again, Komori is grateful to everyone who came.

Two jobs were run using two different image patterns in the demonstrations. For the printing paper, cardboard (0.20 mm) and metalized paper were changed every other day. Through the use of the same paper and image pattern and different varnish, visitors were able so see a comparison of printing effects. Three patterns were printed on 400 sheets of production printing in each job.

	Demonstration on cardboard
In Job 1, after the first pattern was printed in four colors with Kaleido ink, overprint varnish was used on half of the image in the fifth unit, matte varnish was used on the other half of the image in the sixth unit, and coater varnish was laid down on half of the image by the coater unit, allowing visitors to see the comparative effects of pseudo-embossing and matte varnish. In the second pattern, matte varnish and coater varnish could be compared, and in the third pattern, visitors could see a comparison of four-color printing with and without varnish. In Job 2, the image was changed and printing samples were produced using the same three patterns of printing and varnish.

	Demonstration on metalized paper
In Job 1, the first pattern consisted of laying down white in the first unit, then printing four colors, then applying overprint varnish, and creating pseudo-embossing by applying coater varnish on half of the image with the coater unit. For the second pattern, white in the first unit was not applied, and following four-color printing, overprint varnish and coater varnish were applied. For the third pattern, after four-color printing, coater varnish was applied and visitors were able to compare the effects of printing with white and applying varnish. In Job 2, the image was changed and printing samples were produced using the same three patterns of printing and varnish.

[Lithrone G40 Concept]
Based on Komori’s commitment to the environment, the Lithrone G40 is a newly developed high performance machine that concentrates the essence of Komori technologies on the theme of concern for the environment and ecology.
The ”GREEN”concept championed by Komori consists of three major pillars: clean, saving and safety. OffsetOnDemand, the ideal mode of printing for the next generation, supports completely new fields of business. OffsetOnDemand establishes a printing environment with greater scope and shortens working time. Komori conceives our mission as providing products and solutions that will produce better printed products that are both considerate of people and profitable for the company, which is good for the environment and a boon to both the market and society.

[Main Feature of Lithrone G40]
1)	Stable high-speed operation with a sheet thickness range of 0.04 ~ 0.8 mm thanks to a new feeder and new delivery based on the feeder and delivery mechanisms of the Lithrone SX40.

“Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am Yoshiharu Komori, the Chairman of Komori Corporation.
I am delighted to welcome you to our new European Graphic Centre, the technology centre for print research and development, as well as for service and customer training for the range of offset printing solutions available from Komori. I also would like to take the opportunity to thank all the partners who have decided to take part in this event.
Over the last several years, the graphic arts industry has been facing the unprecedented dynamism of the global market environment, rigorously demanding changes in every level of the business.
During the coming three days we will demonstrate four of our state-of-the-art technologies in the range of 29 to 40 inch size, as Komori’s answers to the challenges we face.
This time, we are specifically featuring our new innovative print and finishing solutions under the concept of ‘Offset On Demand,’ consisting of ozone-free UV curing technology and high performance inks which maximize the process efficiency and productivity. Since its launch, the system has been enjoying great success in the Japanese market and attracting further attention through international demonstrations held in Japan and in the United States. Here in Europe, together with our partners, we will demonstrate how the system enables you to optimize your production process and improve your productivity using the system on the Lithrone S840P convertible perfector. Furthermore, you will witness the ultimate short make-ready and even shorter turnaround time achieved by the system, which is the key to bringing the offset printing technology into the realm of ‘On Demand.’ I trust the demonstrations will give you the inspiration for many new business opportunities.”

Following this address, presentations were made in the prepress and MIS rooms and a presentation on the MIS-connected K-Station and other DoNet systems was provided in the CTP room. Next, the Offset On Demand demonstration on the eight-color Lithrone S40P perfector equipped with the H-UV system was initiated.
Neil Wrigglesworth, deputy director of the Komori Graphic Technology Center, made the presentations.

First, the speed of drying was shown by four-color printing on both sides on BIO TOP 3 Natural, an FSC-certified paper that is known for being extremely difficult to dry, at the maximum printing speed of 15,000 sheets per hour. This printing paper requires at least half a day or more when using ordinary oil-based printing. The printers, based on their familiarity with the high printing technologies of Europe, were astonished at the instantaneous drying that followed two-sided printing. The printed sheets were taken to the paper guillotine immediately after printing, passed to the saddle-stitching system after being cut to the required size, and then bound and stitched into a brochure that was immediately passed out during the demonstrations.

After the plates were changed by the Full-APC system, the next job was printed on gloss coated paper. To show ’20 Matching,’ in which the proper densities are reached after just 20 sheets of printing start-up through the use of KHS-AI, the first 20 printed sheets were pulled out and placed in order on a table in front of the press so that the visitors could check the color stabilization. The effective value was also explained. In addition, although there are print quality differences between the front and back sides of the sheet with conventional oil-based printing inks due to the effect of the jackets on the perfecting cylinders, this demonstration showed the visitors that there are no front/back print quality differences because the first side is dried by H-UV before turning the sheet, and then the other side is printed with smooth impression cylinder surfaces.
Komori’s latest technologies were also introduced during the demonstrations. The new A-APC (Asynchronous Automatic Plate Changing) system, the PDC-SX Print Density Control-Spectrophotometer system with automatic register adjustment, and the PQA-S Print Quality Assessment, which includes an automatic in-line density measurement function were explained using video projected on monitors.

Several samples of high added-value printed products produced using the H-UV system were also shown and explained. The future expandability of H-UV printing was presented by showing, as examples, high-gloss coating, printing on aluminum metallized paper, printing on film such as PP and PET, drip-off effects, printing on heavy stock, and printing with silver and gold inks.

As soon as the demonstration on the LS40P was concluded, the presentation on the post-press system that had been previously set up was started. How the printed items were finished and made into a 16-page saddle-stitched brochure was explained by carrying out the processing with a live job using the actual equipment.

A demonstration of a five-color Enthrone 29, a press that debuted at IPEX in the UK this year, started with printing on ordinary coated paper. The plates were then changed, the paper was changed to carton board and the next job was printed on a thick substrate. Printing densities were then checked and adjusted with the PDC-SE spectrophotometer in the PQC above the delivery. The compact Enthrone 29, offering a double-size cylinder arrangement with high print quality and high productivity, attracted many visitors, who watched the demonstration with considerable enthusiasm.

This was followed by a demonstration of UV printing with drip-off UV coating on Komori’s flagship machine – a six-color Lithrone SX40 plus coater operating at the maximum printing speed of 18,000 sheets per hour which was set up in another part of the showroom area. The plates were changed midway through the demo, showing the quick changeover process by means of the KHS-AI Smart Sequence.

A five-color Lithrone S29 plus coater was also used to show 20 Matching and pattern coating in combination with conventional ink, overprint varnish, and aqueous coating.

Printing samples other than those created in the demos were exhibited in a sample gallery set up in a meeting room adjacent to the showroom. The room was full of printing samples, including comparisons of conventional and H-UV printing, consecutive samples that show the stabilization of color within 20 sheets of the start of printing, and samples of high added-value printing created in Japan and the US. An environment that permitted all sorts of explanations was provided. This gallery attracted many visitors who viewed the exhibition with lots of interest.

The second day of the event was also cold, with drizzle, clouds and occasional clear skies, while the third day was clear from the morning, but weather conditions became very bad as rain and winds strengthened due to a hurricane that arose near Great Britain. Nonetheless, many visitors came to the event, not only from nearby countries but also from as far away as Russia. Over the three days, the open house attracted around 500 visitors. This open house, which strongly impressed visitors with the power of Komori's Offset On Demand and its adaptability to high added-value printing as well as a total workflow, sparked a great many very lively business discussions.

[Demonstration Highlights]
①	The ability to perform finishing processes immediately after printing thanks to the superior drying performance of the H-UV system
②	The effectiveness in reducing plate costs achieved by work and turn
③	‘20 Matching’ achieved by KHS-AI and the H-UV system<br \?
[Demonstration flow]
In Job 1, using ‘rough gloss paper,’ register/color matched 4-color printing on front side was started and 300 sheets were printed. Without plate changing, printed sheets were immediately moved to the feeder for Job 2 and printed on back side (work-and-turn). After checked front/back registration, 300 sheets were printed and proceeded them to finishing process. Then, job changeover (removing -> ink down -> plate changing -> pre-inking) was conducted for Job 3. In Job 3, using ‘coated paper,’ single-sided 4-color printing was conducted. After color comparison between 20th printed sheet and digital proof prepared at the DoNet Center of the KGC, 300 sheets were printed for production.

The opening ceremony at 4:00 p.m. started with a wadaiko performance by two female drummers, which was followed by welcoming remarks from Mr. Kosh Miyao, President of KAC. On the inside of the tent, images such as logos of manufacturers sponsoring the event were shown using a projector. After the opening ceremony, guests were led inside the building where the demonstration program started.
The venue was filled with approximately 300 people including more than 200 people from printing companies. As part of the welcoming ceremony, three presses were operated at their maximum printing speed: the Lithrone SX40, the Lithrone S40, and the Enthrone 29.

Many samples had been prepared and multiple patterns were created using the same images. For example, there was printing on paper followed by an application of coating, printing using the same images on aluminum metallized paper with a pseudo embossing effect, and printing using the same images on aluminum metallized paper with glossy coating.
Three types of saddle-stitched brochure samples were prepared: a combination of conventional ink and aqueous varnish, a combination of text printed with H-UV ink and a cover page with H-UV/artificial embossing, and a combination of text with H-UV glossy coating and the cover with pseudo embossing. In addition to these three, many more samples were created using different combinations of the images, and cut samples were also made using the cutting machine.

20 Sheets and Smart Feedback were demonstrated once on the Lithrone SX640, and after printing started the speed was increased to 18,000 sheets per hour and several hundred sheets were printed nonstop. Changes in color density were shown by randomly selecting 5 sheets out of the first 20 sheets. From then on, color density was measured regularly every 10 to 20 sheets, and the number was plotted on a chart to show that color density is stabilized within the first 20 sheets.
Afterward, Smart Feedback was demonstrated. Cyan density was altered by approximately 0.07 to demonstrate how the automatic control function responds to the change.
Many participants were impressed with the demonstration of this new boost to the high productivity of Komori’s flagship machine.

Two demonstrations were conducted with the Enthrone 529, which debuted at IPEX in the UK. Plate changing, printing, density measurement with the PDC-SE color control device, and fine adjustment were demonstrated. Customers who showed interest in the high-quality, high-productivity compact press with double-size cylinder design paid close attention to this demonstration and asked many questions.

The demonstration of Lithrone S840P+C, a convertible perfector equipped with H-UV, the innovative UV drying system that is already well-known in Japan, was performed three times. It was the first time that the H-UV system was shown in the US. Plate changing for all eight colors was conducted, and quickly-dried double-sided printing samples with no coating were distributed followed by samples with coating.
Opinions of the print quality, superior coating glossiness, and drying ability were extremely high, and many customers were so eager to check the printing samples that they raced to get them. All three demonstrations were very successful. The ink and coating materials used for this demonstration were provided by Toyo Ink International.

Various samples created in advance were displayed in front of the LS-640, including sheets printed on this press. A demonstration of 20 Sheets on the Lithrone SX629 was conducted for selected customers after the bar opened in the tent located outside. The demonstration, which targeted print enthusiasts, included photopolymer plate changing. Many customers paid close attention right next the machine.

Many samples were displayed in the business meeting area in the demonstration room, providing an environment suitable for offering various explanations. Comparisons of conventional oil-based printing and H-UV printing were displayed, and color stabilization within 20 sheets was shown using sequential samples. Also, 20 sequential prints and the 100th print were displayed to show conventional oil-based printing plus aqueous coating on one side and H-UV on the other side. At KAC, customers interested in purchasing a press are always taken to this room and given detailed explanations on topics such as fast printing start-up, the low quantity of waste paper, H-UV’s quality and fast drying capabilities, and contributions to the environment.

Komori participated in the show in cooperation with its local distributor, Gutenberg with a 1,350-square-meter booth, one of the largest in the exhibition hall.
Komori put the main theme “KOMORI SOLUTIONS” under its corporate slogan “Kando: Beyond Expectations”. Through various demonstrations by exhibited four presses and three exhibit zones of Offset press, Chambon and DoNet set up in the booth, we introduced the details of those superior performances including the latest technologies to meet various customers’ demands. During the exhibition, we conducted two demonstrations for each press - in total eight times a day that attracted many visitors. We set up a small Japanese garden in the reception area in order to create a Japanese atmosphere for customers who visited our booth.

Two of the presses that we exhibited, the LITHRONE S29 equipped with H-UV system and the ENTHRONE 29, were being introduced to the Latin American market for the first time.
In the demonstrations of the LITHRONE S29, we showed the effects of the H-UV System – its “high quality printing”, “quick delivery”, “powder-free operation”, and “production improvement”.
For the ENTHRONE 29, we demonstrated a quick job change from thin paper (0.12 mm) to cardboard (0.46 mm).
We exhibited two LITHRONE S40Ps, which already have a proven track record of successful results in Latin America. On one we demonstrated a six-color + coater with single-sided printing and on the other one we demonstrated a 4-color with double-sided printing, including one job change respectively.

The individual press demonstrations generated a lot of intense customer interest.

On the fourth day of the exhibition, June 23 from 6 p.m., we held a “Latin American Party”. The party was very exciting by the entertainment such as samba, etc., and through it we were able to deepen our relationships with customers, our staff, and distributors from each country.

With quite a large number of visitors, the Komori booth became one of the most flourishing booths at the exhibition. In spite of the severe situation the global printing industry has been operating under, our company was able to achieve results that exceeded our expectations. Thank you again to all of you.

We are looking forward to seeing you again at the next ExpoPrint 2014.

The Wilkins Group has invested in a Komori Lithrone SX40, signing for the press at last month's Ipex with delivery taking place directly from the show.
The six-colour machine has been installed at the headquarters of the Nottingham-based group.

Employing 200 staff in England alone, the group specialises in supplying retail packaging worldwide to a wide range of markets such as food – chilled and frozen, textiles and confectionery products.

Although the Wilkins Group has additional sites in China, Romania and Sri Lanka, the Komori investment will offer extra capacity for its UK operation.
